Bystřice pod Hostýnem lies at the foot of the Hostýn Mountains. The Bystřička stream divides the town in two and flows through Zahájené, its largest municipal park. On 1 January 2026, the town had a population of 7,828.

The town's earliest written mention dates to 8 January 1368, and it was declared a town in 1864. First mentioned in 1440, the castle has belonged to the town since 1990. It houses the town museum, and wedding ceremonies are held on its first floor.
