Ostrata lies about 10 km north-east of Zlín. The village is at the foot of the mountain ranges called Hostýnské vrchy and Vizovické vrchy.

The first written mention of Ostrata dates from 1391. Until the end of 2000, Ostrata was part of Zlín. Following a referendum, it became an independent municipality on 1 January 2001. A stone cross dating from 1837 stands in the village square; the village also has a chapel dedicated to Saint Anne and a memorial to the victims of the world wars.
